The Technical Guide

Master the automotive terminology used by professionals and manufacturers across the UK.

Engine Performance

Understanding an engine's output requires looking at more than just its size. BHP (Brake Horsepower) represents the total power capacity, whereas Torque (Nm) is the force that gets the vehicle moving.

RPM Relevance

Peak power is often reached at high RPM, while peak torque is usually available lower in the rev range—especially in turbocharged diesel engines.

Aspiration

How the engine receives air—Naturally Aspirated, Turbocharged, or Supercharged.

Drivetrain

The system that transmits power to the wheels (FWD, RWD, or AWD).

Valve Train

Controls the intake and exhaust flow (e.g., 16v means 4 valves per cylinder).

Decoding Dimensions

Vehicle dimensions are critical for practical daily use. While "length" and "height" are self-explanatory, other metrics provide deep insights into a car's character.

  • Wheelbase: The distance between the centers of the front and rear wheels. A longer wheelbase generally provides a smoother ride and more passenger room but a larger turning circle.
  • Track Width: The distance between the center-line of the wheels on the same axle. Wider tracks typically offer improved cornering stability.
  • Kerb Weight: The weight of the car with standard equipment and all necessary operating fluids (fuel, oil, coolant) but without the driver or cargo.

Advanced Spec Glossary

Euro Status

The mandatory emissions standard required for sale in the EU and UK (e.g. Euro 6d-Temp).

Drag Coefficient

A measure of how aerodynamically efficient a vehicle is (Cd). Lower is better for fuel economy.

Final Drive Ratio

The ratio between the output of the transmission and the rotation of the wheels.

Fuel and Taxation

In the UK, vehicle taxation (VED) and clean air zone access are determined by technical specifications. CO2 g/km is the primary driver for tax costs, while NOx emissions play a critical role in ULEZ and CAZ compliance.

By understanding these specifications, you are not just a car buyer—you are an informed consumer capable of predicting the total cost of ownership over several years. Use our Car Spec Check tools to verify these metrics for any vehicle before you buy.
